Discover Charlottetown culture & win a trip for two!
There is something free-spirited about summer trips to Prince Edward Island, especially after a particularly long, snowy winter spent bundled up beneath too many layers of clothing. With the snow finally gone and bright purple and canary yellow crocuses popping up behind picket fences in gardens all over town, Charlottetown is putting on her playful summer wardrobe, slipping on her dancing shoes and readying herself for another long, fun-filled summer!
Charlottetown is a vibrant cultural capital all year round, but in the summer all that culture spills outside into the city’s picturesque streets, lush parks, squares and boardwalks, cafes, restaurants and bars. Buskers and intercultural dancers will entertain you as you stroll through town browsing shops and enjoying a Cows ice-cream cone, and history comes to life when you take a walking tour of Charlottetown’s historic district led by costumed Confederation Players, a tour of Beaconsfield Historic House or a horse-drawn carriage ride through the downtown area. If you would rather experience the city from the water, spend an afternoon or evening enjoying the salty ocean air and sound of seagulls soaring overhead while you enjoy a meal of freshly-caught PEI lobster with Top Notch Lobster Tours.
Although there is so much to enjoy outdoors that it is hard to go inside, one of the highlights of Charlottetown in the summer is the Charlottetown Festival—a lineup of musicals that includes Canada’s longest running musical, Anne of Green Gables, Evangeline, a love story based on Longfellow’s heroine Evangeline, featuring the lively traditional music and dance of the Acadian, Maritime and Cajun cultures; and Dear Johnny Deere, a new musical woven around the foot-stomping songs of Canadian roots legend Fred Eaglesmith. Can’t get enough of Anne? Head across the street and get tickets for Anne & Gilbert at The Guild.
If you’re more in the mood for a quiet afternoon, pay a visit to the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, a nationally recognized art gallery (the largest in Atlantic Canada) in the heart of downtown Charlottetown. If you finish browsing and feel like more art, Details, Past & Present and GG Gallery are both just steps away on Victoria Row.
After dark visitors and islanders mix and mingle at the city’s many restaurants and bars, enjoying live tunes performed by both local and visiting musicians, and savouring world-famous Island seafood, local wine and spirits.
