7 Fascinating Things About Charlottetown’s Largest Hotel (That You Didn’t Already Know)

May 13, 2019

For over thirty years, the Delta hotel has graced the skyline of Charlottetown’s picturesque harbour and welcomed guests from all over the world to its waterfront location in the heart of historic downtown. But if you think the Delta is ‘just another chain hotel’, banking on brand recognition to maintain its stellar reputation, think again.

Behind its strong brand names (the Delta became part of the Marriott family of brands in 2015), you’ll find a whole lot of heart and innovation at this waterfront hotel. They’re keeping it real and relevant for today’s travellers with tech-friendly guestrooms, unique amenities, unexpected perks and an unparalleled commitment to customer service. Read on to learn 7 Fascinating Things You Didn’t Know About Charlottetown’s Largest Hotel.

1. The Guest Rooms are Tech-Friendly
Is there really any such thing as too many electrical outlets? We don’t think so and neither does the Delta! Recognizing that travellers today, whether on business or pleasure trips, are often carrying multiple devices, the hotel ensured that their extensive room renos in 2014 included the addition of conveniently-placed electrical outlets in each room. It’s one of those small details you don’t necessarily notice until you, your spouse and your two kids end up in a hotel room with one easy-to-access outlet and four devices that need charging, at which point a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors becomes the only reasonable way forward. Better to just book a room that has lots of outlets, right?!

Guest rooms also feature an iPod dock, free high speed wireless internet and an uber-functional workspace.

2. Dinner is Served up with a Local Flare
Make sure you include the Delta’s on-site restaurant, Water’s Edge Resto Bar & Grill, on your Charlottetown culinary itinerary. Executive Chef Javier Alarco, Chef Justin Ford and the Delta’s culinary team are always pushing the boundaries of creativity and showcasing local foods at the hotel’s bright and breezy restaurant. The summer menu includes a Market Feature that changes weekly and showcases an enticing ingredient sourced by the chefs from a local farmer or fisher. The result? Mouthwatering dishes such as Lobster Carpaccio, Seafood Papardelle, Vegetable Terrine and much more!

And the restaurant’s local flare isn’t limited to their food. Live music courtesy of talented Islanders often accompanies dinner hour. During the 2018 summer season, hotel and restaurant guests will be treated to a local treasure – 11-year old fiddler and stepdancer, Luka Hall, will be playing in the hotel lobby adjacent to the restaurant on select days from approximately 4pm – 5pm. Fresh seafood, fiddles and warm hospitality – it doesn’t get any more PEI than that!

3. Going Above and Beyond is Second Nature
It’s perhaps no surprise that guests of the Delta receive outstanding customer service from the hotel’s staff, but the degree to which they go above and beyond for guests is mighty impressive. Whether it be an Associate helping a couple plan their 30th anniversary trip to PEI for four months leading up to their visit or delivering unexpected treats to kids celebrating their birthdays, the Delta’s team are always on top of the fine details and in search of ways to surprise and delight guests.

The Delta’s commitment to going above and beyond doesn’t stop with guest service. Staff members also contribute to the Island community through numerous volunteer efforts as part of the Delta’s Spirit to Serve program. From tree planting to spring clean-up of green spaces to donating blood, staff at every level embrace the volunteerism encouraged by the Delta. One Delta staff member at the associate level even championed working with the city’s Upper Room Food Bank, rallying other associates and the kitchen staff. As a result of these efforts, the hotel developed an ongoing commitment to work with the Upper Room. On the first Tuesday of each month, four staff members from the hotel take food prepared by the hotel’s kitchen staff and serve it at the Upper Room. The staff volunteers rotate each month, so everyone has a chance to volunteer for the important work of feeding others in the community.

4. They Do Towel Art
Alligators, elephants, dogs, monkeys – you name the animal, the Delta’s room attendants have probably made towel art in its likeness. While not every hotel guest is going to find a fluffy white towel animal upon arriving in their room, these impressive (and adorable!) creations are a delightful surprise to those that do.

Towel art is just one of the many talents the Delta staff love to share with their guests – they’ve even been known to host towel art workshops during the hotels Wednesday guest reception.

5. You Can Enjoy Lawn Games and Patio Drinks All Summer Long
Tucked in the backside of the Delta is Brakish!, the hotel’s seasonal dockside eatery. A dreamy waterfront respite for those in search of relaxation and drinks, Brakish! is a favourite amongst locals and visitors in the know.

Besides serving up stunning views of the harbour, summery drinks and a locally-inspired, fun menu, the resto also has a few unexpected surprises in store for customers. Directly adjacent to the patio is their Brak’Yard, a grassy expanse complete with picnic tables and lawn games you can play while waiting for your meal or after a couple of beverages! And on weekends throughout the summer, the sounds of talented, local musicians mingle with patio conversations as the sun sets over Charlottetown.

6. They’ve Thought of Everything
The Delta has truly thought of everything – whether you’re on a romantic getaway or family vacation, travelling on business or having a staycation in the city, they’re ready to help make your trip unforgettable with all sorts of unexpected perks and on-site amenities.

Want to start your morning off with a relaxing yoga session in your room? No problem, the Delta’s got complimentary yoga mats for yogis of all levels.

Headed to the beach for some fun in the sand and ocean? Be sure to let the front desk know and they’ll hook you up with a beach bag complete with beach towels, Frisbees, pails and shovels to make your best sandcastle expedition even better!

In search of some well-deserved pampering? Look no further than The Cocoon Wellness Spa. Located in the hotel, this locally-owned and operated spa offers a full suite of wellness services designed for the traveller – from massages to facials to pedicures to laser treatments and more.

Ready to hit the road and explore all PEI has to offer? The Delta recently partnered with PEI Car Rental, an independent company, to ensure guests have on-site and easy access to car rentals.
Forecast not looking favourable? Stay dry with an umbrella you can snag at the front desk, and explore the shops, restaurants, and galleries that greet you the minute you step out of the hotel.

7. The Delta Knows How to Host a Big Gathering
Besides being the city’s biggest hotel, the Delta is also home to the Charlottetown Convention Centre. The convention centre is PEI’s largest venue for meetings, conferences, weddings and other big (and small!) gatherings and can accommodate well over 1,000 people. In addition to exceptional facilities, the Delta is committed to ensuring its clients’ needs are met and their expectations are exceeded. To win a bid for an automaker’s convention, the Delta reached out to the local dealership representing automaker and asked to borrow two of their vehicles. One was parked in the Convention Centre to provide a first impression and the second was used to give the clients a tour of the facilities themselves. Suffice to say, the Delta won that bid!

Of course, beyond meetings and conventions, the Delta is a highly-coveted venue for many couples planning their PEI wedding. With seven ballrooms and an outdoor space overlooking the water, the hotel can host a massive shindig or an intimate ceremony and reception, complete with dinner, dancing and guestrooms mere steps away from the fun.
